The south-west county has a history spanning Roman, Norman and Saxon conquests – and you can explore it all with a stay at one of the best hotels in Wiltshire.

One of most picturesque parts of the UK (it forms part of the Cotswolds, after all), Wiltshire is a must-visit location for a staycation, among the likes of the Lake District and Cornwall.

The north-western reaches of Wiltshire form the part of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – don’t miss the village of Castle Combe, a filming-location favourite, and the market town of Malmesbury on the southern edge of the Cotswolds, which is England’s oldest borough and home to a 12th-century abbey.

There may be no coastline in Wiltshire, but you can stroll the banks of the rivers that flow through it: two River Avons and the Thames.

If you’re visiting Wiltshire on a Jane Austen pilgrimage, you can visit the author’s 17th-century home in Chawton. Another star sight is, of course, Stonehenge.

National Trust properties in the area include the magnificent Lacock Abbey, once home to the photography pioneer William Henry Fox Talbot; the beautiful Stourhead, with its Palladian manor and landscaped grounds; and Mompesson House, close to the cathedral in the medieval city of Salisbury.

Hotel highlights include the family-friendly Woolley Grange in Bradford-on-Avon, which will keep everyone entertained, whatever their age. Lucknam Park just outside of Bath is one of the grandest country piles in England, with a spectacular spa and an acclaimed fine-dining restaurant. Here are some of our favourite hotels in Wiltshire…
